Why BDD?

We need a supply of drinking water that is going to last. Sustainable and reliable municipal water supply in New Mexico generally requires use of both groundwater and surface water, when it is available. Groundwater is used in times of drought, while respecting the limits of the aquifer to continue to supply groundwater on a permanent, sustainable basis. Through the Rio Grande, the Buckman Direct Diversion (BDD) project will allow us to access the City’s and County’s allotted San Juan-Chama water supply.

Our groundwater wells are not sustainable at our current pumping (use) levels, and our Santa Fe River Reservoirs cannot always meet our needs, particularly during a dry year. BDD will provide a new source of water in addition to our existing sources, and will also help our aquifer rest and recharge (refill) so that it will be here for our children, and their children.
